Have I covered what a COSHH assessment needs?

What regulation 6 says a COSHH assessment must consider and regulation 7’s order of control, ticked against yours - with the extra duties for carcinogens, asthmagens and biological agents.

Questions people ask

What must a COSHH assessment consider?

Regulation 6(2) lists twelve things, (a) to (l): the hazardous properties of the substance, the supplier’s health information including the safety data sheet, the level, type and duration of exposure, the circumstances and amount, activities like maintenance with high exposure, any workplace exposure limit, the effect of controls, health surveillance results, monitoring results, substances in combination, the classification of any biological agent, and anything else needed. The page lists the ones you have not ticked.

Do I have to write it down?

Regulation 6(4): where the employer employs 5 or more employees, the significant findings are recorded as soon as is practicable, with the steps taken to meet regulation 7.

What order do controls come in?

Regulation 7: prevent exposure first, by substitution by preference. Where that is not reasonably practicable, control it - in order of priority, (a) processes, systems, engineering controls and equipment, (b) control at source including ventilation, and (c) personal protective equipment only where adequate control cannot be achieved by other means, in addition to (a) and (b).

What changes for a carcinogen or an asthmagen?

For a substance with H340, H350 or H350i, regulation 7(5) adds measures such as enclosing the process and designating areas, and 7(7)(c) requires exposure as low as reasonably practicable - as it does for H334. Type the hazard statements from the safety data sheet and the page says which apply.

Is this a COSHH assessment?

No. It checks the steps against the Regulations’ own words. The assessment itself is the employer’s, made by someone competent. Pascoe Business Systems makes no compliance claim.
